Cpl. Matthew Maine, Delta Company, 4th Light Armor Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve leads his team in the squad pushup challenge as part of a ‘Marine of Steel’ event, during a sports day at Ilha do Governador, Rio de Janeiro, Sept. 4, 2022. This event consisted of five-man teams from Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Jamaica, Paraguay, the United States of America, and Uruguay who participated in a competition across a one-kilometer course, and eight exercise stations, including sprints, fireman carries, tire flips, swimming, box jumps, and weight lifting to test their strength while building international comradery. UNITAS is the world’s longest-running annual multinational maritime exercise that focuses on enhancing interoperability among multiple nations and joint forces during littoral and amphibious operations in order to build on existing regional partnerships and create new enduring relationships that promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility.
