An aerial photograph shows a large US Navy amphibious transport dock ship underway in open blue ocean, with an American flag visible on its superstructure. A second, larger naval vessel — appearing to be an amphibious assault ship or aircraft carrier — is visible in the background at distance. The sea conditions are calm and the sky is mostly clear with light clouds.

USS New Orleans (LPD 18) and USS America (LHA 6) steam away from formation in support of a Valiant Shield 2020 photo exercise. Valiant Shield is a U.S. only, biennial field training exercise (FTX) with a focus on integration of joint training in a blue-water environment among U.S. forces. This training enables real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces through detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas.
