An aerial photograph shows two large US Navy warships underway in open blue ocean. The foreground vessel is an amphibious assault ship bearing the hull number '9' on its bow, with personnel visible on the flight deck and rotary-wing aircraft parked along the sides. A larger aircraft carrier is visible in the background at a distance, also underway.

USS America (LHA 6) and the Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) break away from formation in support of a Valiant Shield 2020 photo exercise. Valiant Shield is a U.S. only, biennial field training exercise (FTX) with a focus on integration of joint training in a blue-water environment among U.S. forces. This training enables real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces through detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas.
