    U.S. Air Force airmen from the 18th Maintenance Group march toward the coast of Iwo To, Japan, formerly known as Iwo Jima, July 26, 2012. During World War II, Iwo Jima was primarily used by the U.S. Army Air Forces as a strategic midway point between Okinawa and Honshu island, Japan. Overall, a total of 2,251 B-29 emergency landings on the island were recorded during the war. Similarly, 1,191 fighter escorts and 3,081 strike sorties were flown from Iwo Jima against Japan.
