U.S. Marine 1st Lt. Trevor Ellingson with Air Combat Element, Marine Rotational Force – Darwin, takes part in training at Nackeroo Airfield, Bradshaw Field Training Area, Northern Territory, Australia, Aug. 10, 2020. Ellingson is a native of Gurley, Ala.
“I’m an unmanned aircraft systems officer. I fly the aircraft, that’s my primary mission. I’ve been with VMU-3 for almost a year now. We very much are a family. It’s a small unit, but we get a lot done. A lot of forward progress has been made since I stepped on deck in October. We declared FOC [full operational capability] in February with our new system the RQ-21, and this is the first deployment that it’s gone out since declaring FOC. It’s very exciting for us, a lot of new gear. We’re not testing it anymore, we’re no longer in the transition stage. We’re ready to operate with this weapon system, even out of the back of a Humvee.”
During the extended training, MRF-D’s ACE made history by launching an RQ-21A Blackjack into flight, from Australian soil, for the first time ever. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Harrison Rakhshani)
