U.S. Marine Sgt. Zachary Cordoba with Air Combat Element, Marine Rotational Force – Darwin, takes part in training at Nackeroo Airfield, Bradshaw Field Training Area, Northern Territory, Australia, Aug. 10, 2020. Cordoba is a native of Albany.
“My Master Sergeant, Top Sawhney, gave me an ultimatum. He said “VMU for another five years, or the Reaper program.” I looked into it: the Marine Corps utilizes the RQ-21, but they’re looking to transition to a more capable UAV, the MQ-9 Reaper. I’ll be going to an Air Force base, learning to operate the Reaper’s sensor technology, which takes a couple years. The plan from there is to become an instructor, and return to a VMU to pass on the knowledge to rest of the Marines. Don’t get me wrong, the RQ-21 is alright, but the Reaper offers much more potential. I don’t want to stop at surveillance and reconnaissance, I want to be in the action, dropping bombs on the enemy.”
During the extended training, MRF-D’s ACE made history by launching an RQ-21A Blackjack into flight from Australian soil for the first time ever. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Harrison Rakhshani)
