Oregon Army National Guard soldiers and the firefighters with the Eugene Fire Department load passengers on to an Oregon Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopter during a simulated mass casualty scenario, as part of the Vigilant Guard Exercise at Alton Baker Park in Eugene, Ore., May 4. The exercise is designed to test the interoperability of local and state first responders and the National Guard, and has been coordinated with U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Planners hope the event will enhance multi-agency cooperation and response in disaster situations.
