SAN DIEGO (July 29, 2019) Damage Controlman 2nd Class Keneddi Eddings uses a portable exothermic cutting unit (PECU) on a high security combination lock aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8). Typically, PECU is used for cutting through steel to access a blocked space but it can have various uses onboard. Makin Island, homeported in San Diego, is conducting depot-level maintenance availability. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Colby A. Mothershead)
