JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 20, 2019) – Chief Hospital Corpsman Kristin Ferri (right), discusses professional development with Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Jessica Collazo. Ferri, a native of Midland, Texas, says “As a Navy chief, I’m privileged and honored to be afforded the opportunity to provide leadership. I’m humbled and indebted to those who have forged the way before me. We’re indebted to our sailors. Our CPO heritage is what guides my understanding of my mission as a chief.” One hundred and twenty-six years ago, on April 1, 1893, Navy General Order 409 established the rate of chief petty officer, the highest enlisted rank at that time in the U.S. Navy. Serving as both technical experts and leaders, chief petty officers are recognized as the backbone of the Navy. Newly commissioned junior officers and sailors often receive training from chief petty officers during their indoctrination into the Navy.
