Col. Frank Donovan, commanding officer, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, explains the unique capabilities of an MV-22 Osprey to Dr. Kathleen Hicks, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for strategy, plans, and forces in the hangar of USS Iwo Jima, Feb. 7, 2012. The visit, which included a number of deputy assistant secretaries and their staffs, was focused on learning about the broad capabilities of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group during their certification exercise. Discussions were held on such topics as the Navy-Marine Corps team; capabilities relating to amphibious operations; and developing innovative, low cost, and small footprint approaches to achieve U.S. security objectives. The 24th MEU is conducting their CERTEX with Iwo Jima ARG, scheduled Jan. 27 to Feb. 17, which includes a series of missions intended to evaluate and certify the unit for their upcoming deployment.
