Lt. Gen. Richard Mills, deputy commandant for combat development and integration, is briefed on new capabilities, inside of an MV-22 Osprey, aboard USS Iwo Jima, Feb. 7, 2012. Mills conducted the visit with a number of deputy assistant secretaries of defense and their staffs to learn about the broad capabilities of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group. Discussions were held on such topics as the Navy-Marine Corps team; capabilities relating to amphibious operations; and developing innovative, low cost, and small footprint approaches to achieve U.S. security objectives. The 24th MEU is conducting their certification exercise with Iwo Jima ARG, scheduled Jan. 27 to Feb. 17, which includes a series of missions intended to evaluate and certify the unit for their upcoming deployment.
