Col. Frank Donovan, commanding officer, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, explains the unique capabilities of the MEU and Amphibious Ready Group to a group of deputy assistant secretaries of defense and their staffs aboard USS Iwo Jima, Feb. 7, 2012. The visit was focused on learning about the broad capabilities of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group during their Certification Exercise. Discussions were held on such topics as the Navy-Marine Corps team; capabilities relating to amphibious operations; and developing innovative, low cost, and small footprint approaches to achieve U.S. security objectives. The 24th MEU is conducting their CERTEX with Iwo Jima ARG, scheduled Jan. 27 to Feb. 17, which includes a series of missions intended to evaluate and certify the unit for their upcoming deployment.
