Col. Frank Donovan, commanding officer, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, welcomes Dr. Kathleen Hicks, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for strategy, plans, and forces, and Lt. Gen. Richard Mills, deputy commandant for combat development and integration, in the flag mess of USS Iwo Jima on Feb. 7, 2012. The visit, which included a number of deputy assistant secretaries and their staffs, was focused on learning about the broad capabilities of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group during their Certification Exercise. Discussions were held on such topics as the Navy-Marine Corps team; capabilities relating to amphibious operations; and developing innovative, low cost, and small footprint approaches to achieve U.S. security objectives. The 24th MEU is conducting their CERTEX with Iwo Jima ARG, scheduled Jan. 27 to Feb. 17, which includes a series of missions intended to evaluate and certify the unit for their upcoming deployment.
