Second Lt. Joseph P. Blaker of Maple Grove, Minn., the executive officer for Charlie Company, 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 194th Armor, based out of Sauk Centre, Minn., applies a combat patch to one of his soldiers during the company’s combat patch ceremony held Sept. 11, 2011. The combat patch worn on the right shoulder sleeve of a soldier’s uniform recognizes their service in a combat arena and the unit they served under. Charlie Company, part of the 34th Infantry Division, received the symbol of the Red Bull – the insignia features a steer skull over an “olla,” or Mexican water flask. The patch acknowledges the extensive training conducted by the Red Bulls in New Mexico in 1917 while preparing to deploy to Europe.
