OSAN, Republic of Korea - Osan City Mayor Kwak Sang-Wook places a flower at the Task Force Smith Memorial, July 6, to commemorate the 68th anniversary of the first battle of the war involving U.S. Soldiers. TF Smith, comprised of a makeshift battalion of the Japan-based U.S. Army 24th Infantry Division, was sent to South Korea to delay the advance of North Korean forces. Inexperienced, understrength and ill-equipped, TF Smith sustained 60 killed, 21 wounded, and 82 captured, during its battle against North Korean forces. Nonetheless, TF Smith delayed the North’s advance and reinforcements were eventually able to repel the invasion. (Photo by Staff Sgt. Todd Pouliot, 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade)
