OSAN, Republic of Korea - Political, military and civic leaders, veterans of the Korean War, soldiers and guests, honor the flags of the Republic of Korea and the U.S. during the playing of the two nations’ national anthems at the 68th TF Smith Memorial Ceremony, July 6. Each year, the city of Osan commemorates the U.S. Soldiers who came to the defense of South Korea, and more specifically, Osan, to block and delay the North’s advance as reinforcements were assembled. TF Smith, comprised of a makeshift battalion of the Japan-based U.S. Army 24th Infantry Division, was sent to South Korea to delay the advance of North Korean forces. Inexperienced, understrength and ill-equipped, TF Smith sustained 60 killed, 21 wounded, and 82 captured, during its battle against North Korean forces. Nonetheless, TF Smith delayed the North’s advance and reinforcements were eventually able to repel the invasion. (Photo by Staff Sgt. Todd Pouliot, 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade)
