PACIFIC OCEAN (March 9, 2018) Mass Communication Specialist Seaman John Owen, assigned to the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), documents incoming surface contacts as part of a Ship’s Navy or Otherwise Photographic Intelligence Exploitation Team drill during a simulated strait transit exercise. Essex is training with the other ships from their amphibious ready group in the Navy’s first ARG SWATT. SWATT is led by Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center, and is designed to increase warfighting proficiency, lethality, and interoperability of participating units.
