German soldiers paint the support structures of the Mike Spann memorial at Qala-i-Jangi, near Mazar-e-Sharif, northern Afghanistan. Nearly a decade of harsh weather wore on the memorial until a team of coalition service members dedicated their time and resources to restoring and protecting the monument.
