A close-in weapon system (CIWS), identifiable as a Phalanx-type system, is captured mid-fire aboard a naval warship at sea. A muzzle flash and smoke plume are visible, indicating active firing during what appears to be a live-fire exercise or test. The overcast sky and open ocean provide the backdrop for this shipboard weapons demonstration.

PACIFIC OCEAN (March 26, 2017) The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) fires a Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) during a live-fire exercise. Nimitz is underway conducting Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) with its carrier strike group in preparation for an upcoming deployment. COMPTUEX tests a carrier strike group's mission-readiness and ability to perform as an integrated unit through simulated real-world scenarios.
