A U.S. Marine in desert MARPAT camouflage kneels before a battlefield cross memorial, which consists of a rifle with bayonet fixed into the ground topped with a combat helmet. The wooden backdrop displays the insignia of the 1st Marine Division and reads 'FIDDLERS GREEN,' a traditional cavalry afterlife reference now used broadly in military memorial contexts. The scene is surrounded by sandbags, indicating a forward operating base or combat outpost environment.

Lt. Col. Adolfo Garcia, commanding officer for 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, kneels to pay respect to his fallen brother, Sgt. Ronald A. Rodriguez, at Firebase Fiddler’s Green, Aug. 30. Rodriguez was killed in action, Aug. 23. He was 26 years old. “At a time like this, no eloquence of words can describe our loss and no amounts of sadness or emotion can adequately express our sorrow,” Garcia said. “We can only sadly, yet proudly, say that we have had the opportunity to know, to have worked with and to have served with this fine Marine.”
