Mary Meek and her husband, Robert, watch their son, 1st Lt. Jeffrey Meek, a Wilmette, Ill., native, and assistant operations officer with the 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, as he talks Nov. 13 at Fort Hood, Texas, about the day he was shot in the head by an enemy's bullet. While the Meeks retired in Rhinelander, Wis., they still maintain the family home in Wilmette. They said they are so proud of their son and grateful that his equipment protected him.
