Flags representing the East Dynasty in the 1600s flutter in the wind at the Naha Giant Tug-of-War Festival Oct. 11 in Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The flags represent the Battle of the East and West Dynasties as they struggled for power. Young men of Okinawa carried the flags during the festival in a dance to demonstrate their strength. The dance also serves as a way for the East and West to motivate their teams to win before the tug-of-war began. This year’s tug-of-war had approximately 275,000 people in attendance.
