GENERAL CAPTION: Mountainous terrain and few roads have hampered economic development in Nepal. The U.S. Agency for the International Development is helping to ease the situation by constructing suspension bridges at vital points throughout the country. These foot bridges speed the flow of trade and government services to outlying areas, especially during the monsoon season when high water can isolate large areas.
Thirteen such spans have been constructed so far. A.I.D. has contributed a total of $566,000 to this project, including $309,000 in rupees created by the sale of U.S. Government owned foodstuffs.
