U.S. Agency for International Development’s Disaster Assistance Response Team Leader, Bill Berger, updates international donors of the U.S. relief operations in Kathmandu, Nepal. Berger gave his remarks on how the U.S. government relief assistance is coordinated, the role of the Disaster Assistance Response Team, and a summary of USAID’s response. “USAID is the lead U.S. federal agency responding to disasters overseas,” said Berger. “We have the ability to tap any resource within the U.S. government that we need to bring. So, in this instance the first thing we did was get our search and rescue people here. We had two 57-man, six-dog teams who immediately jumped on military lift and got out here within 72 hours and began search and rescue.” U.S. military members along with USAID and search and rescue teams from the Los Angeles Fire Department and Fairfax County, Virginia, came to the aid of Nepal after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck April 25.
