1851年、イギリス人彫刻家フレデリック・スコット・アーチャー(1813~1857)が、湿式コロジオン法を発明する。沃化物を分散させたコロジオンを塗布したガラス板を感光剤の硝酸銀溶液に浸し、湿っているうちに撮影するという方法で、撮影後、すぐさま硝酸第一鉄溶液で現像する必要があった。そして次にシアン化カリウム溶液で定着させると、ガラス板のネガが完成する。
