BUSAN, Republic of Korea (Sept. 17, 2025) – Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea (CNFK) personnel participated in a mass-casualty evacuation drill alongside Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 15 (HM-15), the U.S. Army 65th Medical Brigade from Camp Humphreys and Republic of Korea Fleet (CRF) counterparts at Busan Storage Center (BSC), Pier 5, Sept. 17, 2025. The exercise tested joint capabilities in patient movement, helicopter operations, and expeditionary surgical support. An MH-53E Sea Dragon from HM-15 transported patient role-players staged in the vicinity of the Commander, Republic of Korea Fleet helicopter landing zone, where CNFK personnel coordinated the safe transfer of patients to medical personnel from the 65th Medical Brigade.
“This is one of the most important areas of operations in the world,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Aldo A. Peña, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Korea senior medical department representative and medical planner. “Training together ensures interoperability and stability for ready-to-fight effectiveness tonight.”
Patient role-players, including Sailors assigned to CNFK, triaged in the vicinity of the helicopter landing zone before 65 th Medical Brigade transported them by Field Litter Ambulances (FLAs) to Busan Storage Center. There, the 65th Medical Brigade provided Role 2 surgical care, which consists of mobile, lifesaving surgical interventions to stabilize casualties before movement to higher levels of care.
“This drill is another opportunity to work together, and its exercises like these that allow us to improve the flow of operating together,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jes Walker, Deputy Force Surgeon, CNFK. “The more confidence we have in each other, the more confidence we can instill in our partners. That way, the Republic of Korea can know they can rely on us, come any contingency.”
CNFK is the U.S. Navy’s representative in the Republic of Korea, providing leadership and expertise in naval matters to improve institutional and operational effectiveness between the two navies and to strengthen collective security efforts in Korea and the region.
