ROTA, SPAIN (May 21, 2025) – Warfighter readiness remains the cornerstone of operational success for the U.S. Navy. Ensuring every Sailor is medically prepared to execute the mission is not just a goal--it’s a necessity.

Supporting that readiness, Navy medical personnel sharpen their own clinical and operational skills by providing care in real-world environments, such as aboard ships, where their expertise directly contributes to the mission.

Naval Medical Readiness Training Command (NMRTC) Rota recently demonstrated its commitment to warfighter readiness and medical force proficiency by providing vital support to the USS Stout (DDG 55), a guided-missile destroyer currently forward-deployed to the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations.

In a coordinated effort, NMRTC Rota personnel assisted the Stout crew with meeting Individual Medical Readiness (IMR) requirements, a key component of maintaining a mission-capable force. Their support included conducting laboratory draws, performing hearing screenings, and administering vaccinations for 123 Sailors aboard the ship. All vital components of IMR requirements that ensure service members are prepared for deployment and operational duties.

“This support is essential not just for compliance, but for ensuring our warfighters are ready in every sense; physically, mentally, and operationally,” said Lt. Cmdr. Thomas Hurtado, Operational Forces Medical Liaison Services Program Director. “When a ship like the Stout gets the medical backing it needs, it directly contributes to mission success and force lethality.”

This partnership exemplifies Navy Medicine’s mission to project medical power in support of naval superiority. “Every Sailor we clear for duty strengthens the fleet,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Patrick Moe. “Our goal is to ensure no Sailor is left behind due to preventable medical issues.”

NMRTC Rota serves as a force multiplier in Navy Medicine’s strategic global medical support mission throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East while also supporting operational readiness and maintaining a strategic repository of expertise at the Naval Hospital Rota Military Training Facility within the Iberian Peninsula.

Navy Medicine is represented by more than 44,000 highly-trained military and civilian health care professionals – provides enduring expeditionary medical support to the warfighter on, below, and above the sea, and ashore.
