GEORGETOWN, Texas – (March 2, 2019) Georgetown Independent School District (ISD), in cooperation with Navy Recruiting District (NRD) San Antonio, hosted a SeaPerch Regional Competition held at the Georgetown Recreation Center.
More than 44 high school, middle school, and elementary teams from Georgetown and Bryan ISD’s to include Boys Scout Troop No. 405 competed in the annual competition.
The regional competition consisted of four evolutions: grading of teams’ engineer notebooks, the new mission, search and rescue challenge course, speed obstacle course, and interviews.
The top three high school teams and top six middle and elementary school teams with the best scores advanced to the interview portion of the competition.
Placing first in the high school division was Team Axolotls of Georgetown High School with Team Deep SeaPerch of Richarte High School placing second.
The first-place team in the middle school division was Team Underwater Odyssey of SFA Middle School located in Bryan.
The three teams will compete nationally in the 2019 SeaPerch Challenge to be held on the campus of the University of Maryland, June 1 – 2.
“This is a great way to module our learner profiles,” said Paige Hoellen, the science, physical education, and health coordinator with Georgetown ISD. “There are many skills which we want our students to possess after leaving Georgetown ISD and SeaPerch provides them the opportunity to utilize their problem-solving skills, adapt to difficult situations, and increase their critical thinking.”
According to Hoellen, who has been involved with SeaPerch for five years, the above are skills which employers and colleges are looking for from students after high school.
Dr. Fred Brent, superintendent of Georgetown ISD delivered opening remarks during the awards ceremony.
“Our partnership with the Navy is very important to us,” said Brent. “The Navy has invested heavily in this program and we think SeaPerch is a perfect way to showcase our partnership between the Navy, the school district, principals, teachers, and staff which provides our students with different opportunities to showcase their learning experience.”
SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-out-school setting.
Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme.
Sailors assigned to Navy Recruiting Stations Georgetown and Round Rock were present to spread Navy Awareness and speak with parents and students on the various career fields in the Navy.
NRD San Antonio’s area of responsibility includes more than 30 Navy Recruiting Stations and Navy Officer Recruiting Stations spread throughout 144,000 square miles of Central and South Texas territory.
