Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 5 Seabees participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony Aug. 3, after completing construction of school classrooms located in the heavily populated district of Aloguinsan in the Philippines.
The Seabee Construction Civic Action Detail (CCAD) Cebu started the project in October 2014 while NMCB 4 was deployed to the site and turned it over to NMCB 5 in February 2015 during a scheduled deployment rotation.
Project Crew Leader Steelworker 2nd Class Joshua Brewer faced exceptional challenges throughout the deployment, but never doubted his crew's ability to complete the project in time.
"This was a learning experience for everyone, but I always knew we would complete it in time” said Brewer. “The whole team gave 100 percent effort and you can't give credit to one person, we all earned it together."
The U.S. Navy worked alongside the Philippine Army Engineers building the school.
The ribbon cutting ceremony kicked off with the playing of the Philippine and United States National Anthems, with Seabees and Philippine Army Engineers standing in ranks together. The Ceremony continued with the school's principal, Ms. Rena M. Managaytay giving opening remarks and praising the Seabees for their hard work.
Each Seabee and Philippine Army Engineer was awarded a certificate of recognition from the principal and district officer in charge in Aloguinsan, Danilo A. Manguilmotan.
As part of the crew who worked on the school for the past six months, Builder 3rd Class Samantha Becker said, "It made everything worth it to see how much we were actually able to impact the lives of the families in this community."
The school will to serve more than 2,000 students each year, relieving the schools overcrowded classrooms, and allowing students and teachers to broaden their education opportunities for years to come.
The CCAD's mission is to execute engineering civic assistance projects, conduct skills exchanges with the host nation, and perform community relations events to help enhance shared capabilities and maintain relationships.
NMCB 5 is homeported in Port Hueneme, California, and is currently deployed to Okinawa, Japan, supporting Navy and joint forces throughout the U.S. Pacific Command with construction projects and humanitarian missions in more than 13 different geographical locations.
