A World War II reenactor shakes hands with a child while riding a World War II-era military motorcycle with sidecar during the 82nd Remembrance Ride in Groesbeek, Netherlands, Sept. 19, 2026. The ride brought history back onto the roads of Groesbeek, where restored vehicles and reenactors helped connect the community to the Soldiers who fought there during Operation Market Garden. As the United States marks 250 years of independence, Operation Market Garden commemorations offer a living example of the long relationship between Americans and the Dutch. From Dutch trade and support during the American Revolution, symbolized by the First Salute at St. Eustatius in 1776, to American and Allied forces fighting together in the Netherlands in 1944, that history continues today through communities that preserve the memory of those who served and through and enduring U.S.-Dutch partnership.
