Emergency responders and bystanders are providing medical assistance to injured individuals on a grass lawn. Dark smoke is visible rising in the background near a large building. Multiple personnel in various uniforms are coordinating triage and first aid efforts.

Medical professionals treat injuries outside the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. Retired Air Force Maj. Bridget Larew and retired Army Maj. Lorie A. Brown, medical personnel with the DiLorenzo Pentagon Health Clinic’s, orchestrated by triage and treatment to save the wounded while retired Army Col. (Dr.) James Geiling raced to the scene. Across the country, U.S. Public Health Service Lt. Cmdr. (Dr.) Susan Lippold volunteered to help at ground zero in New York.

These brave military medical heroes reflect on the significance of preparing for a disaster response, and the chaos of that fateful day 25 years later. (U.S. Navy photo by: Journalist 1st Class Mark D. Faram)
