On Sept. 11, 2001, al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four airliners, two of which were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center killing 2,753 people. This statue of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers is made from steel recovered from the site. The plaque reads “A Place of Reflection. In honor of all who have served our country. You are not forgotten. WTC steel donated by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.” The sculpture was displayed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center until it closed in 2011. It is currently included in the September [KB5.1]2026 installation of the National Museum of Health and Medicine’s “250 Years of Military Medicine” exhibit, that describes military medicine’s role in response and recovery efforts after the 9/11 attacks in New York City and at the Pentagon.
