On Sept. 11, 2001, al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four airliners, two of which were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, killing 2,753 people. The clouds of dust created when the World Trade Center collapsed became a symbol of the horror of the attack on 9/11. This is a sealed sample of dust collected from Ground Zero. [KB1.1]The dust also represents a public health threat because it contained a variety of toxic substances. Many New York City Fire Department [KB2.1]rescue workers reported respiratory problems, called the “WTC cough,” after inhaling the dust while rescuing survivors or recovering victims of the attack. As of 2011, 18,462 of the 60,270 people at risk from dust inhalation had received medical treatment.[KB3.1]
