    John Kidwell, principal architect with Hepner Architects, stands beside the newly unveiled Buffalo Soldiers Monument at Veterans Memorial Park and Museum in Tampa, Florida, Aug. 29, 2026. The monument features a bronze statue depicting 10th U.S. Cavalry Sgt. William H. Thompkins leading his mount, accompanied by a plaque honoring the historic all-Black regiment. Thompkins earned the Medal of Honor on June 30, 1898, in Tayabacoa, Cuba, when he voluntarily went ashore under heavy enemy fire to rescue wounded comrades stranded during a Spanish-American War landing operation.
