Brig. Gen. Clint A. Barnes, Commanding General of the 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) places a recently earned combat patch onto Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Alfred McCoy, 103rd ESC Senior Theater Management Non-commissioned Officer in Charge, during the 103rd ESC’s uncasing and awards ceremony at Norwalk High School, Norwalk, Iowa, June 10. 2026. The purpose of “combat patching” is to formally recognize and visibly mark service in a combat zone or hostile environment. Formally called the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Military Operations in Hostile Conditions (SSI-MOHC), it is worn on the right sleeve of the uniform to signify past wartime deployment experience.
The uncasing of the colors formally marks the unit’s return from its deployed mission and symbolizes the transition from an operational environment back to home-station operations. The awards and recognition highlight the dedication, sacrifice and accomplishments of the soldiers throughout the deployment, while the presentation of Purple Hearts honors those who were wounded in service to their country. The ceremony provides an opportunity for the command, families, fellow service members and community to recognize the 103rd ESC’s accomplishments, honor the sacrifices of its soldiers, and mark an important milestone in the unit’s return home.
