Brig. Gen. Clint A. Barnes, Commanding General of the 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) places the Purple Heart onto Army Reserve Col. David Landon, 103rd ESC Operations Officer in Charge, during the 103rd ESC’s uncasing and awards ceremony at Norwalk High School, Norwalk, Iowa, June 10. 2026. The purpose of the Purple Heart is to recognize and honor U.S. military service members who have been wounded or killed by enemy action while serving in the line of duty.
The uncasing of the colors formally marks the unit’s return from its deployed mission and symbolizes the transition from an operational environment back to home-station operations. The awards and recognition highlight the dedication, sacrifice and accomplishments of the soldiers throughout the deployment, while the presentation of Purple Hearts honors those who were wounded in service to their country. The ceremony provides an opportunity for the command, families, fellow service members and community to recognize the 103rd ESC’s accomplishments, honor the sacrifices of its soldiers, and mark an important milestone in the unit’s return home.
