U.S. Army Reserve CW3 Clarence Pickett, a network engineer with the 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) signs a Heart for Military Service created by the Hearts of Mercy & Compassion (HMC), an organization under the Lutheran Church of Christ after the conclusion of the 103rd ESC awards and uncasing ceremony at Norwalk High School, Norwalk, Iowa, August 14. 2026. This heart was made for recently fallen 103rd ESC Soldier, Sgt. Declan Coady. HMC is a Christian ministry run by Lutheran Church Charities that gives handcrafted fabric hearts and crosses to people facing loss, illness, or hard times.
The uncasing of the colors formally marks the unit’s return from its deployed mission and symbolizes the transition from an operational environment back to home-station operations. The awards and recognition highlight the dedication, sacrifice and accomplishments of the soldiers throughout the deployment, while the presentation of Purple Hearts honors those who were wounded in service to their country. The ceremony provides an opportunity for the command, families, fellow service members and community to recognize the 103rd ESC’s accomplishments, honor the sacrifices of its soldiers, and mark an important milestone in the unit’s return home.
