U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. James Brooks, an infantry rifleman, with the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, receives a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal from Lt. Col. Keegan Kinkade, the battalion commander of the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, both assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB) in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, during an award ceremony near Campo, California, Aug. 15, 2026. Brooks was presented with the award for saving the life of a suspected illegal alien that was suffering from a heat-related illness. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
