U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. James Brooks, an infantry rifleman, and U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Valeria Carmona, a hospital corpsman, both with the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB) in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, listen to Lt. Col. Keegan Kinkade, the battalion commander of 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, deliver remarks during an award ceremony near Campo, California, Aug. 15, 2026. Brooks and Carmona were both presented with a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for saving the life of a suspected illegal alien that was suffering from a heat-related illness.
