U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District Commander Col. Robert McTighe looks at old gold mining infrastructure at the Lava Cap Mine remediation site in Nevada County, CA. The 19th century mill has left groundwater contaminated with arsenic, and USACE is tackling the remediation with U.S. EPA to treat the groundwater using a semi-passive system where the water is routed through wetlands and limestone beds to help remove the contamination as it travels downstream.
