Capt. Rodolfo Jacobo, commanding officer of the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), passes a flag to Abel Ortega Jr., son of Battle of Bataan, Bataan Death March, and Japanese POW camp survivor U.S. Army Pvt. Abel Ortega Sr., during a ceremony to commemorate the 81st anniversary of V-J Day, Aug 15, 2026. The flag was made in Japan in 1945 by Abel Ortega Sr. out of parachute silk when the POW camp he was held in was liberated. Bataan is currently undergoing regularly scheduled maintenance in the General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia.
