Brig. Gen. Leland D. Blanchard II, Commanding General (Interim) of the District of Columbia National Guard, speaks with ABC News correspondent Alex Presha about the upcoming one-year anniversary of the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful mission in Washington, D.C., Aug. 5, 2026. During the interview, Brig. Gen. Blanchard highlighted the mission's impact on public safety, community trust and the enduring partnership between the National Guard, the Metropolitan Police Department and interagency partners. Since its launch on Aug. 11, 2025, the mission has become the largest collaboration between law enforcement and the National Guard in modern history, demonstrating how Soldiers and Airmen can strengthen communities through professionalism, presence and service.
