Brig. Gen. Michael Kjar receives his first salute as Adjutant General of the Utah National Guard from U.S. Army Col. Andrew Owens and U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Gene Buckner, the respective assistant adjutant generals for the Utah Army and Air National Guards during the Utah National Guard change of command ceremony August 3, 2026 in Salt Lake City. During the ceremony, Maj. Gen. Boyack relinquished command of the Utah National Guard to then Col. Michael Kjar. In addition to assuming command of the Utah National Guard, Kjar also received a promotion from colonel to brigadier general. The change of command represented the orderly transfer of authority and responsibility, ensuring continuity of leadership and mission readiness across the Utah National Guard.
