On April 14, Super Typhoon Sinlaku hit the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), causing significant damage to Rota, Saipan and Tinian. Then three months later, Super Typhoon Bavi made landfall, taking out the power supply on Rota. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) quickly responded since there was additional personnel and resources pre-positioned ahead of Super Typhoon Bavi’s landfall along with the resources that were already on the ground due to Sinlaku. Currently, USACE, in coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, are installing generators around the island of Rota to restore power to their critical infrastructure. They have installed generators at the police and fire stations, water pumps, cellphone towers, the power plant, two shelters and two hotels. Recently, they installed a generator at the judicial center. (U.S. Army photo by Monique Freemon)
