Civilian contractors use a front loader to load locally sourced soil into a dump truck in National Defense Area 2 near Fort Hancock, Texas, July 20, 2026. The soil is transported to construction sites throughout the area to fill HESCO barriers during the ongoing barrier reinforcement operations. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
