Civilian contractors use a front loader to grade soil in front of HESCO barriers in National Defense Area 2 near Fort Hancock, Texas, July 20, 2026. Grading the terrain provides a stable foundation that helps support the barriers, particularly during periods of wet ground conditions. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
