U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Kera Mayfield participates in swim qualification training at Camp Lejeune in 2012. Mayfield joined the Marine Corps in 2003 and became a Supply Administration and Operations Specialist Marine and eventually a Marine Security Guard, at numerous United States Embassies around the globe. After serving 12 years as an active-duty Marine, Kera went on to earn her bachelors in forensic science from Youngstown State University, Ohio, before becoming a medicolegal death investigator at the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System.
