American Battle Monuments Commission Acting Secretary Col. (ret.) Robert Dalessandro speaks during the Rededication Ceremony of the Sacred Soil Marker in Section 18 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, July 5, 2026. This marker, containing earth from the World War I battlefields, was originally placed at ANC in 1929 but deteriorated and was removed in 1938. Thanks to a multi-organizational effort in honor of America's 250 anniversary, new "sacred soil" was gathered from the same WWI battlefields and placed into a renewed Sacred Soil Marker at ANC.
