Ancient Ascent | National Guard aviators from Utah and Nevada take on mission of prehistoric proportions

Utah Army National Guard parachute riggers assigned to 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne), pose for a photo with excavation crew members from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Kane County, Utah, June 13, 2026. The fossilized remains of an Ornithomimid, a theropod dinosaur which resembled a modern-day ostrich, is in the net and rope rigging in preparation for aerial hoisting by a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. The fossil will be ground transported to North Carolina for preparation and study before ultimately returning to the Natural History Museum of Utah for display. The Utah National Guard trains on aerial hoist missions to maintain the proficiency needed to operate in areas inaccessible by traditional means. This capability supports search and rescue and disaster response efforts, while also enabling Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) missions that provide essential services to communities and strengthen military readiness. Regular training ensures aircrews and ground personnel remain ready whenever they are called upon. (Utah National Guard photo by Maj. Jeffrey
