A large U.S. Navy warship bearing hull number 79 is docked at a pier with a full crew manning the rails in dress uniform formation. The bow of the vessel is prominently visible, featuring a forward gun turret and dozens of sailors standing at attention along the deck. This appears to be a formal departure or arrival ceremony, a traditional naval practice known as 'manning the rails.'

NAVAL STATION ROTA, Spain (June 17, 2026) - Sailors assigned to Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) man the rails prior to returning to Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota, Spain, June 17, 2026. Oscar Austin returned from a scheduled deployment in support of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa strategic objectives and U.S., Allied, and partner interests. As the "Gateway to the Mediterranean," NAVSTA Rota provides U.S. and Allied forces a strategic hub for operations wherever and whenever they are needed. NAVSTA Rota is a force multiplier, capable of promptly deploying and sustaining combat-ready forces through land, air, and sea, supporting warfighters and their families, and fostering the U.S. and Spanish relationship.
